Last year, single dad Jason faced uncertainty about which career path to pursue after being released from prison. As the primary carer for his son, Jason was determined to build a better life for them both and refused to let his past define his future.

He was referred to IntoJobs as his Workforce Australia provider, and it was there that he connected with Mobile Employment Consultant (MEC), Nic.
Jason shared how Nic developed a six-month employment plan for him, aiming to help him secure work within that timeframe. “I had a plan from the start to find work within six months of being released. It was pretty hard at first because of my criminal history, so no one would hire me. But in the meantime, Nic helped me out brilliantly and enrolled me in courses.”

Although committed to his job search, Jason encountered early barriers, including his criminal record, the absence of a driver’s licence and limited qualifications for a new industry.

While Jason was a qualified baker, the demanding hours weren’t suitable given his parenting responsibilities. With support from his MEC, Jason was referred to LJP Civil Construction for upskilling. IntoJobs also helped him obtain his driver’s licence and covered six months of vehicle registration, enabling him to actively search for work. Eventually, Jason secured an interview with Panelfab.

A turning point came during his job interview, where Jason’s honesty made a lasting impression. “I told my boss about my criminal history and because I’d been honest with him, I got the job,” Jason said.

This moment underscored the value of transparency and the willingness of some employers to offer second chances.
Since starting at Panelfab, Jason has continued to develop his skills with support from IntoJobs. He has successfully obtained his Forklift Licence and is now preparing to complete Test and Tag Training to further improve his qualifications. His ongoing employment at Panelfab is a testament to his hard work and the tailored support he’s received.
Jason credits IntoJobs with helping him reach this point, and the collaboration with Panelfab has extended to benefit other jobseekers. IntoJobs clients now have the opportunity to gain practical experience at Panelfab as part of their certification process, creating more pathways into the construction industry for others in the region.
Looking ahead, there are further opportunities for Jason’s career development, including completing a rigging course to support temporary fencing work, ensuring his continued growth in the industry.

“I haven’t looked back since. Thanks to IntoJobs and Nic, who did everything she said she would do, I’m very thankful for their help,” he said.
